Primary Learning Journey

Curiosity, confidence, and care in every classroom

The Primary years are a time of growth, discovery, and joy in learning. At Shrewsbury Phnom Penh, our Primary School builds on the firm foundations of Early Years, guiding students as they grow into independent, creative, and compassionate learners. From the first days of Year 1 through to the transition into Secondary, every child is encouraged to flourish academically, socially, and personally.

A Seamless Transition from Early Years

Children enter Primary School ready to explore a bigger world of ideas, friendship, and responsibility. Our teachers ensure that the move from play-based learning in the Early Years to more structured study in Year 1 is natural and nurturing. Classrooms remain vibrant, hands-on environments where curiosity and imagination drive learning.

Curriculum Overview

Rigorous, relevant, and inspiring

The Primary curriculum follows the National Curriculum for England, adapted for our international context and enriched by the culture of Cambodia and the wider world. Learning in Primary is active, engaging, and purposeful; it combines academic challenge with creative exploration.

Specialist Subjects

Lessons are taught by experienced class teachers, supported by specialist subject experts who bring their passion and expertise to every area of learning.

Key Stages 1 and 2

Building strong foundations for future success

Key Stage 1 (Years 1–2)

Focuses on establishing essential literacy and numeracy skills, nurturing curiosity through discovery-based learning, and building confidence in communication and collaboration.

Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6)

Deepens understanding through investigation, project work, and creative thinking. Students learn to plan, research, and present ideas clearly, preparing for the independence and responsibility of Secondary School.

Across all year levels, students explore science through experimentation, develop global awareness in humanities, and express themselves through music, art, and performance. By Year 6, they demonstrate maturity, curiosity, and a readiness to take on new challenges.

Teaching and Support

Every child known, every child supported

Our Primary teachers are more than educators; they are mentors who know each child individually. Small class sizes allow for personal attention, ensuring that every learner is both challenged and cared for.

Our Primary teachers are more than educators; they are mentors who know each child individually. Small class sizes allow for personal attention, ensuring that every learner is both challenged and cared for. We provide tailored support through:
  • Intervention programmes to boost core skills when needed
  • Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) support for individual learning plans
  • English as an Additional Language (EAL) support to build confidence in communication and access the full curriculum
Regular progress tracking, parent meetings, and clear feedback help families stay connected to each child’s growth and success.

Co-Curricular Learning

Learning beyond the classroom

Co-curricular life in Primary is vibrant and full of opportunity. Students are encouraged to explore new interests and develop talents through activities such as:

After-school clubs run daily, offering choices that inspire teamwork, confidence, and curiosity. Every activity reflects the Shrewsbury belief that learning should be joyful and well-rounded.

Character and Community

Growing hearts as well as minds

Character development is central to the Shrewsbury experience. Through the Floreat model and our Salopian virtues — resilience, integrity, empathy, creativity, curiosity, and responsibility — students learn to act with kindness, courage, and purpose.

Our House System builds belonging and teamwork, while weekly assemblies celebrate effort, achievement, and values. Students also take part in community service, cultural events, and leadership roles that nurture empathy and confidence.

A Foundation for Life

The Primary years at Shrewsbury Phnom Penh prepare children not just for Secondary School, but for life. With a balance of academic excellence, character education, and co-curricular opportunity, our students leave Year 6 as confident, compassionate young learners ready to flourish in the years ahead.
